Trust you've had a great summer! At Bristo, we are redeveloping in a big way. We are seriously committed to being:

Rooted in Christ
Relational as church
Reaching for community

We really believe that the key to forming healthy community today is to be rooted in Christ, relating in the way that He enables and teaches. You'll see that at Bristo we are re-evaluating our Building and its suitability for present-day use: we're committed to either redeveloping on the present site or relocating to another one. Also, we are relocating our manse and also looking to develop a community house that will serve the needs of those recovering from addictions and looking to step back into community life in society. We really believe that Jesus is the answer. So come among us if you're looking to be made whole, to become active and nourished as a disciple of Jesus Christ, a committed and useful member of society.

I really hope you can make it! As many of us have commented it has been ages since we last had a Ceilidh and it is for a very good cause. Our sister church in Lom does a lot of good work amongst the poor folk of their town and in support of severely disadvantaged Children’s homes.

Enjoy a movie for beans!

I friends and It Club warmly invite you to a night of movie-watching and popcorn munching for the price of a can of beans! Or a can of spaghetti, or of meat, or of fruit, or well anything!

This Saturday at 7pm we are having a movie night in the upstairs lounge with snacks and drinks provided, and as usual we are not charging for the event, but if you would like to come we would ask that you would bring at least one can of tinned goods for the Basics Bank run by the West Pilton Christian Centre.

The Basics Bank is an initiative which makes basic food and toiletries for those who for whatever reason find themselves in need of short term support. Perhaps someone in the family has lost the job or their benefits has not come on time, whatever the reason, once they are referred to the Basics Bank, the team will do their best to provide them with what they need. What's happening at Bristo in January?

This month at Bristo we are tracing Jesus' footsteps through the Gospel according to Mark, and asking the question, "Just what is this Good News that Jesus proclaimed?"

As we do so, we are also reflecting on the nature of the new creation that God is bringing about and our part in it. The deacons have distributed a discussion paper asking how we see ourselves to be a 'house of prayer', a 'family of believers' and as having a 'heart for outreach'.... We are realising that while we are already experiencing a foretaste of the greater peace and healing to come to this world, God is always doing something new and it is our role to keep in step with his Spirit (Galatians 6).

One thing is certain, if we keep on following where Jesus leads, then exciting things are afoot this new year at Bristo!

In the past we have had classroom assistants and waitresses, English students and secretaries, but we've never had a Tenor on our team before!

"Hi everyone! I'm just creating an event page for the Opera performances I announced in the church this morning - we're doing Gianni Schicchi by Pucinni and Cavalleria Rusticana by Mascagni - a double bill, two operas, both set in Sicily round about the same place and time.

The performances will be in the Adam Smith Theatre in Kirkcaldy on Thursday 11th and Friday 12th November at 7:15pm, and Saturday 13th at 2:15pm. Tickets are £13 adult, £11 concession and £7 child.

It Club are coming on the Friday, so that would be a great night to come! (Please read Matt's comment below for more info)"

Baptisms at Bristo

A couple of weeks ago, it was great to baptise into faith in Jesus Christ and membership of our congregation both Cheryl and Jess, and to hear from them how they have come to be followers of Jesus Christ. In 3 weeks we will be baptising Buki, Richard, and Taz. It is great to see people coming into the journey of following Jesus Christ.

Andrew and Michelle's wedding

Refurbished Sanctuary

We have entered not only Advent, but a new season here at Bristo. We have refurbished the sanctuary, thanks to the hard work and commitment of Brian and his team. Now we have soft seating, open planning and digital projector screen. Great!

But it's a new season in other ways. God is moving us forward, deeper into the reality of Christmas: the feast of the Incarnation. Exciting changes and developments (not the the sanctuary alone!) are on line and heading our way. We are determined to be a community that expresses the reality of the Kingdom of God here in Edinburgh. Incarnational, caring and reaching. No thrills or theatre. The real thing. Let's go for it!

In the evening, we have a student from the Baptist College preaching who is the grandson and shares a name with a former church officer at Bristo - Ron Rye. We look with expectation to God's meeting with us in our services of worship.

Douglas Wilson

Douglas passed away early this morning. He had declined rapidly but was in good form yesterday when there was a family celebration gathering at his house. Our sympathies are with Isobel and their daughter Nicola, as they experience grief and seek to cope with their loss. A good man has now moved on into the fullness of the Lord, in the reality of His bodily resurrection.

The funeral will be at Warriston Crematorium, main chapel, next Friday 3rd July @ 2.00pm

Baptism marks the beginning of the Christian journey. It is as people commit themselves to this way that we welcome them into the church. Today we baptised Anneline and Ling. We pray God's strengthening of them for the journey along the way of Jesus Christ.

This Sunday 14th June we will witness the baptism of Anneline and Ling, during the morning service. This is a good opportunity to invite friends to see what this is all about. After the service, we will share a church lunch as a common meal upstairs.

The AGM of the congregation will take place on Wednesday evening next week, 17th June, as 7.30pm in the Middle Hall.

The Church Family All-age Picnic takes place on Saturday 20th June, meeting at 11.00am (to register contact Linda on jonahhams@btinternet.com)

The next deacons' meeting will be on Monday 29th June at 7.45pm in the pastoral office.

on Wednesday, a team of 4 from our sister church in Lom, Bulgaria, will arrive. The pastor will be accompanied by his wife and two deacons. We will have a number of special events on over the coming week, and they will be with us at our services this weekend. It's great to have them with us, as we look to continue and further develop our relationship with our Christian family there.

Hello everyone, :-)

Matt here again, with the latest on It Club and Encounter gatherings over Easter.

While tomorrow there will be no It Club, due to the invitation for everyone of all ages to join in a Good Friday meditation (see below,) Easter Monday brings with it an opportunity to gather for

"an afternoon of Easter Celebrations through

dance, song and creative fun,

and a meal"

This will take place from 3 - 6 pm on Easter Monday (Monday 13th April)

There will be practices for musicians and dancers at 2pm beforehand on the day. Please let your parents know if you need to be here early! (if you want to use the building on another day, then please arrange this with myself for the sake of health and safety, even if you do have access to a set of keys! Thanks!)

The meal will be a 'bring and share' affair.
Can I ask all the girls to bring something savoury for the main course and for the boys and the coachs to bring sweets! I'll bring the drinks.

One final word for anyone confused as to why we would be celebrating Easter on the Monday when this is more of a Bank Holiday than a faith based one, allow me to explain:

At It Club, we really are a mixed bunch of different ages, interests and backgrounds, churched and unchurched, coming together to share life and to learn what it means to be a Christian community.

Those kids who don't go to Church might only get one chance to celebrate the life changing events of Easter this year. So rather than presenting them with just Good Friday or Easter morning, with either the Cross or resurrection, we thought it good to celebrate the whole of Easter, the sorrows and the joys on one day. We hope that in the Lord, it will be both a fruitful and enjoyable, meaningful time.

Healing Room @ Bristo & Congregational Prayer Meeting

The planning meeting for Healing Room @ Bristo is this Thursday 8th January at 2.00pm in the pastor's office.

The morning of congregational prayer will be next Saturday 10th January in the Middle Hall from 10.00am - 1.00pm, followed by a simple Agape Meal (lunch!). All are welcome.

Tomorrow (4th January) services @ 11.00am and 6.30pm will look at 'vision casting into 2009' for our lives together as church and as individual disciples. Sunday School resumes.

This coming Sunday, we will have our usual church lunch following the morning service. We serve soup, bread and cheese, tea, coffee, cakes, fellowship and a precious time together! In the evening, we join with other congregations in the Comely Bank Council of Churches for our annual joint carols and reading for Christmas. The 7.00pm evening service, which this Sunday replaces our own evening service, is at St Stephen's Stockbridge Church of Scotland Parish Church, Saxe Coburg St, Edinburgh EH3 5BN.

Healing Room @ Bristo

We are engaged in moving forward in mission in a number of ways that are people-relational, seeking to provide real service to others in Jesus' name.

One such development is in establishing our own 'Healing Room'. That is, an open door to members of the wider community to come for ministry through prayer and insight offered by those serving. This 'open door' would probably be at a time-slot/s regularly offered on a weekly basis.

Bristo Redevelopment Plans move forward

Last night, after a joint meeting with the Redevelopment Group, the deacons together with group members present agreed that the Lord's direction and guidance, which we embrace, is that we proceed to test the feasibility of the Redevelopment Group' s report. That is, that we focus om exploring two recommended options for the development of our buildings and their use in serving our witness and ministry in the coming years. These plans are in the hands of deacons and redevelopment group members present at the meeting, and all of them will be able to discuss and explain what we are doing. Last weekend, some of us were at the Scottish Baptist Union Assembly. A very worthwhile trip to Glasgow! The them was 'the DNA of Discipleship'. This weekend, our pastor will be arriving at the Russian Baptist Union's seminary in Moscow, for a week of teaching, then visiting Voronezh, where our next intern, Tanya, comes from. Bill Cowie, pastor from Madeira Street, will be preaching here in on Sunday morning, with our own Gill Sharer sharing in the evening. It's important for us to be woven into this bigger picture of forming Christian discipleship throughout the world. We're part of something that stretched across the whole world ...

Greetings from Lom, where there are 7 of us here from Bristo Baptist Church, visiting our partnered church in Bulgaria. Stoicho and Yura Apostolov serve the congregation here as pastor and wife, and Jennifer and I have with us Maureen Johnston, Jeanette Lumsden, Jantis White, Curt Harrier and David Purves. Yesterday we visited the village church in Mominbrod, where Maureen and Jennifer shared; and today, Jeanette, Janis and Curt are shared during the morning service, while David and Curt are leading a youth event in the afternoon.

We bring the greetings of Bristo and will be joining in ministry here through to Friday and will reporting back to Bristo on Sunday coming.

Puting Jesus back into Church

This Sunday, we begin to look at 1 Corinthians and the message spelt out of how even a very lively and 'successful' church still needs to centre on Jesus Christ. Ryan will preach at both services. We commit the Bulgarian team to the Lord as they head off to Lom, where they will take part in services this Saturday and Sunday. The team return next Saturday.

The generosity of God!

..... and the call to holiness. Holding the two together is not always easy; but we see how God calls us to this, as the pastor takes us through looking at Matthew 20. This Sunday, we share a church lunch together after the morning service. Today we commit the Bulgarian mission team, as they go off this coming Friday.

Bulgaria and the Kingdom of God

Our mission team will be in Lom, Bulgaria, two weeks from now! Tonight they have a meeting for fellowship, prayer and planning. Also, the soup kitnchen is about to start in our sister church, and finances are about to be sent from us in support of this.

This is the practical reality of the Kingdom of God - not something 'up there', but us 'down here' caught up in the 'Who', 'What' and 'How' of being conduits of the Kingdom in Jesus' name here and now. Tomorrow, at our morning and evening services, the pastor will guide us into better understanding the Biblical basis of this, as we look together at Matthew 19. We'll seek God to express His presence and power among us and through us. This is what church is all about!

Harvest Thankofferings

We don't collect money from people at Bristo; but we do receive the tithes and offering people want to make to God, and put them to good use. Our administrative overheads? Zero! THis year our harvest thankoffering gift goes to support the soup kitchen and other ministries of Lom Baptist Church in Bulgaria, where our mission team will be visiting this October.

Our preachers today are the pastor in the morning and David Purves, church member and now a new intern, in the evening. David is studying theology this year as well as working and taking part in the intern programme, and is preparing for full tine pastoral ministry.

A New Season Starts!

Summer holidays come to an end and the church comes together again for a new season in our service of God. We look forward to welcoming you! We have a big building, but the main entrance is on Dean Path, up from the traffic lights. Sunday services meet 11.00am and 6.30pm and Prayer meetings on Saturday (9.30am) and Monday (10.00am). Taking responsibility at the heart of community

We have some more folks who want to come into full membership. In our church, all members are 'office bearers': we are all responsible to God, together, for everything to do with Bristo. The people who decide who become members are those who are already members! To become a member, you have to be serious about following Jesus and committed to being part of the community's witness. The way it works is that the deacons bring a recommendation to the meeting, and then we discern together. This time we have three reports to share, all of which celebrate the grace and goodness of God in people's lives. So there'll be a brief meeting in the lower lounge after the morning service this Sunday, to do this. Try and be there, if you're part of our community.

Bristo Interns into 2009

It's time for applications and enquiries for the internship scheme at Bristo into 2009. The scheme now enters its third year, and we have had wonderful interns from England, the USA and Russia. It's been a great success and the deacons are keen to for us to continue this scheme. We are pursuing a radical, Christ-Centred faith that is genuinely counter-cultural. And we want to draw people into this journey of discovery with us.

We take people into the internship on the basis of recommendation.
